Quick Answer
Kimi Antonelli will wear a special Ayrton Senna tribute helmet at Interlagos, Mercedes need to outscore Ferrari by three points or more to clinch the constructors title in Brazil, and the FIA has confirmed two straight mode zones for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
What is Antonelli's Senna helmet, and why does it matter?
Kimi Antonelli will wear a special helmet honouring Ayrton Senna at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, in his first race since becoming Formula 1 world champion. Antonelli confirmed the plan in the post race press conference in Mexico City, after clinching the title with third place behind Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. He said, in his own words, that he will have a special helmet for Brazil, for Ayrton, and that he thinks it is one of his best helmet designs. The finished artwork has not yet been publicly detailed, so this post does not describe colours or graphics that have not been shown. What is confirmed is the reason for the tribute, and it is a strong one.
The helmet marks 35 years since Senna's famous 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix victory at Interlagos. Senna won his home race for the first time that day, in a McLaren, after battling gearbox problems and completing the closing stages with only sixth gear available. It remains one of the defining performances of his career, and one of the most replayed drives in Formula 1 history. Antonelli, at 20 years and 68 days the youngest world champion in history and the first Italian champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, chose Senna as his hero long before he won the title. He races with number 12 because Senna raced with 12 during his Lotus years from 1985 to 1987 and in his first title winning campaign with McLaren in 1988. He will keep number 12 for 2027 rather than adopt the champion's number 1, a decision he has explained as a tribute in itself.
There is also a personal link to Interlagos that makes this weekend different from a normal tribute. After finishing second at Interlagos last year, behind Lando Norris, Antonelli presented the helmet he had worn during the race to Senna's family, signed with a message of affection. He returns this year as champion, in front of Senna's home crowd, with a helmet made for that crowd. He told reporters after Mexico that the support from Brazil has been incredible, not only this year but already from last year, and that he is very much looking forward to a very special weekend. For Brazilian fans, that matters. For new fans, it is the simplest way into this race: the new champion, wearing a tribute to the greatest Brazilian driver, at the track where that driver won his most famous home race.
What is the corrected Mercedes constructors maths?
This is an important correction to our Sao Paulo preview from Tuesday, and it is worth explaining openly. On Tuesday, this site used stricter maths and said Mercedes needed to outscore Ferrari by four points or more in Brazil to clinch the constructors title. That was based on points alone: Mercedes lead Ferrari by 126 points, 630 to 504, and after Brazil three races remain, in which a team can score a maximum of 43 points per race, or 129 points in total. On points alone, a lead of 129 after Brazil would still leave Ferrari able to tie, so four points looked like the threshold.
RacingNews365, PlanetF1 and Grand Prix, all reporting on Wednesday 4 November, give a different threshold, and they are right, because they include the countback. If Mercedes outscore Ferrari by exactly three points in Brazil, their lead becomes 129 points, which is exactly the maximum Ferrari could gain in the final three races. If Ferrari then won every remaining point and Mercedes scored nothing, the teams would finish level on points, and Mercedes would win on countback, because they have 12 race wins this season to Ferrari's two. Wins are the first tiebreaker when points are level. So the correct threshold is three points or more, not four. If Mercedes outscore Ferrari by three points, they clinch. If they outscore Ferrari by two points or fewer, the fight goes to Las Vegas. If Ferrari outscore Mercedes by four points or more, Ferrari keep the fight alive in their own right, because Mercedes would need a different combination later.
| Constructors position | Team | Points | Race wins this season | | 1st | Mercedes | 630 | 12 | | 2nd | Ferrari | 504 | 2 | | 3rd | Red Bull | 382 | Not the title fight | | 4th | McLaren | 365 | Not the title fight |
The simplest way to say it is this. Mercedes clinch in Brazil if they finish three points ahead of Ferrari on the day, in combined points from Antonelli and George Russell against Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. At the very least, if Ferrari fail to score in Brazil, Antonelli or Russell finishing eighth, worth four points, would be enough on its own. If Mercedes fail to score, Ferrari need eighth place or better to keep the fight alive. If Mercedes win the title in Brazil, it will be their ninth constructors title overall, drawing level with Williams for third on the all time list, and their first since 2021. It will also complete a championship double in the same season Antonelli became champion, which is why Mercedes will race conservatively with Russell, who needs a clean weekend after Mexico, while Antonelli can race freely because his title is already safe.
That correction does not change the rest of Tuesday's preview. The drivers title is settled, the fight for second place is still wide open, with Verstappen on 261 points, Hamilton on 259, Russell on 250, Leclerc on 245 and Norris on 221, so just 16 points separate second from fifth. A win in Brazil is worth 25 points, second is worth 18, and a retirement is worth nothing, so one bad weekend can drop a driver from second to fifth. But on the constructors question, the Wednesday reporting is clearer than Tuesday's stricter version, and this post corrects it rather than quietly repeating the old number.
What has the FIA decided for Interlagos, and what do the experts tip?
The FIA has confirmed two straight mode zones at Interlagos for this weekend, in the new 2026 active aero era. Straight mode replaces the old DRS concept, and the zones are where drivers can use extra straight line performance. The first zone is on the start finish straight, extending from after Turn 14, through Turn 15, and along the main straight. The second zone is on the straight between Turns 3 and 4. The detection point for overtake mode is on the exit of Turn 12, with the activation point after the left hand kink of Turn 13. For fans, the practical point is that Interlagos already produces overtaking, because it is short, anticlockwise, banked in places, and weather affected. Two straight mode zones should help, not hinder, that racing, especially into Turn 1 and into Turn 4.
Expert predictions published on Wednesday are less unanimous about Antonelli than fans might expect. F1 Oversteer's expert team tipped Antonelli's rivals for the win in Brazil, even though Antonelli is champion and in form. One expert said qualifying will go one of two ways depending on weather, with a 60 percent chance of rain interrupting the session, and that if Q3 stays dry, Antonelli will put his Mercedes on pole. Another predicted dominance from Antonelli now that he has finally clinched the title. The disagreement is the point. Interlagos rarely gives anyone a quiet race, and rain is forecast for qualifying on Saturday with a chance of rain on Sunday too, according to Sky Sports. If rain hits qualifying, the grid will be shuffled. If rain hits the race, the second place fight becomes a lottery.
There is also a garage story that will follow Ferrari all weekend. Reporting on Wednesday notes tensions still simmering between Hamilton and Leclerc after Mexico, where Hamilton took his first Ferrari pole and finished second, Leclerc finished fourth, and the two clashed on track and in comments afterwards. Team principal Toto Wolff, meanwhile, praised Antonelli in strong terms, calling him a good person who should be a role model for entitled drivers, and saying the new champion produced a strong drive in Mexico when he only needed ninth to seal the title. Wolff's praise is not just PR. Antonelli needed ninth in Mexico, finished third, and did it after missing Thursday media day with a viral illness. That is why Mercedes trust him to race freely in Brazil, and why Ferrari's internal fight, not Antonelli, may decide whether the constructors title is clinched on Sunday.
When is the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, and how can I watch it?
The Sao Paulo Grand Prix runs from Friday 6 November to Sunday 8 November at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, Interlagos. It is round 20 of 23. The race is 71 laps of the 4.309 kilometre circuit, a total of 305.879 kilometres. There is no Sprint this year, so the weekend is three practice sessions, qualifying and the race. Brazil does not use daylight saving time in November, so Sao Paulo is three hours behind London, two hours ahead of New York, and five hours ahead of Los Angeles.
| Session | Sao Paulo local | London GMT | Berlin and Paris CET | New York EST | Los Angeles PST | Karachi PKT | | Practice 1, Friday 6 November | 12:30 | 15:30 | 16:30 | 10:30 | 07:30 | 20:30 | | Practice 2, Friday 6 November | 16:00 | 19:00 | 20:00 | 14:00 | 11:00 | 00:00 Saturday | | Practice 3, Saturday 7 November | 11:30 | 14:30 | 15:30 | 09:30 | 06:30 | 19:30 | | Qualifying, Saturday 7 November | 15:00 | 18:00 | 19:00 | 13:00 | 10:00 | 23:00 | | Race, Sunday 8 November | 14:00 | 17:00 | 18:00 | 12:00 | 09:00 | 22:00 |
In the UK, every session is live on Sky Sports F1, with qualifying at 18:00 London time on Saturday and the race at 17:00 London time on Sunday. In the United States, the weekend is on Apple TV, with the race at 12:00 Eastern time on Sunday and 09:00 Pacific time. The drivers parade is at 12:00 local time on Sunday, and the national anthem is at 13:44 local time, before the 14:00 local start. Formula 1 lists the broadcaster per country on its official Sao Paulo Grand Prix page, and F1 TV Pro streams the whole weekend where it is available, so check local listings for your country rather than assuming one global channel.
After Interlagos, the season moves to the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Saturday night 21 November local time, followed by Qatar on 29 November and the finale in Abu Dhabi on 6 December. There is also a question hanging over the final races that has nothing to do with points. CNN's report of the Mexico race notes that it remains uncertain whether the final two scheduled Grands Prix, in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, will take place, given instability in the region. That is not confirmed as a change, and this post does not claim any race has been cancelled. For now, Brazil is the story. The champion is crowned, the constructors title can be clinched by three points, the Senna helmet will be on track, and Interlagos rarely disappoints. Set your alarms for Sunday, and expect rain, drama, and a fight for second that goes to the last lap.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Antonelli's Senna helmet for Brazil?
A special helmet honouring Ayrton Senna, marking 35 years since Senna's 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix win at Interlagos, when he finished with only sixth gear available.
Why does Antonelli keep number 12 for 2027?
Because Senna raced with number 12 during his Lotus years and in his first title winning McLaren campaign in 1988, and Antonelli chose 12 to honour his hero.
How many points do Mercedes need to clinch the constructors title in Brazil?
Mercedes need to outscore Ferrari by three points or more, because a 129 point lead would be uncatchable on countback, with Mercedes holding 12 wins to Ferrari's two.
Why did Tuesday's preview say four points?
Tuesday's preview used points alone and ignored the countback. Wednesday reporting from RacingNews365 and PlanetF1 includes the wins tiebreaker, so three points is the correct threshold, and this post corrects it.
Where are the straight mode zones at Interlagos?
On the start finish straight, and on the straight between Turns 3 and 4, with overtake detection on the exit of Turn 12 and activation after the kink of Turn 13.
When is the Sao Paulo Grand Prix race?
Sunday 8 November at 14:00 Sao Paulo local time, 17:00 London, 18:00 Berlin and Paris, 12:00 New York, and 22:00 Karachi.
