Quick Answer
Breeders Cup Saturday at Keeneland features nine championship races, ending with the 7 million dollar Classic at 18:16 Eastern Time. Hughes won Friday's Juvenile and is the early Kentucky Derby favourite, while Magnitude is out of the Classic on veterinary advice, leaving a field of seven.
Breeders Cup Saturday at Keeneland is the biggest day in American horse racing this year, and it arrives after a Friday that changed two stories at once. Hughes, the unbeaten two year old trained by Bob Baffert, won the Juvenile and became the early favourite for the 2027 Kentucky Derby. Magnitude, one of the leading older horses in the Classic, was withdrawn on veterinary advice, cutting the Classic field from eight to seven. Saturday now has nine championship races, with more than 34 million dollars in purses across the whole weekend, and a Classic that is still headed by defending champion Forever Young, reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty, and 2026 Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo.
This is a Saturday guide with Friday's results built in, not a repeat of the earlier weekend guide or the draw results post. The field has changed since the draw on Monday, the Friday winners are now known, and the Saturday times below are the ones that matter tonight, in Eastern Time, London time and Karachi time.
What happened on Future Stars Friday?
Future Stars Friday featured five championship races for two year olds, and the headline race delivered exactly what the favourite backers expected, but not easily. Hughes, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Flavien Prat, won the 2 million dollar FanDuel Breeders Cup Juvenile by two and a quarter lengths, in a time of 1:42.27 for one mile and one sixteenth on dirt. He went off as the 4-5 favourite, paid 3.64 dollars on a two dollar bet, and remains unbeaten in five starts.
Hughes had to work for it. He tracked Damavand through early fractions of 23.36 seconds for the quarter mile and 46.63 seconds for the half mile, was challenged by Coach Pope on the turn, and then held off a late push from American History and Salahudin down the stretch. American History finished second, just a head in front of Salahudin in third, with Coach Pope fourth, three and three quarter lengths behind Salahudin. He Is No Lie stumbled badly at the start and trailed throughout, finishing last of the six runners.
The win gave Baffert his seventh Breeders Cup Juvenile win as a trainer and his 22nd Breeders Cup win overall, tying a record, and it gave Hughes a trio of Grade 1 victories, after the Del Mar Futurity and the American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita. Hughes was a 675,000 dollar purchase at Keeneland's 2025 September Yearling Sale, and he is named in part after United States Olympic hockey hero Jack Hughes. Baffert has won the Kentucky Derby six times, but never with a horse who also won the Breeders Cup Juvenile, which is why Friday's win starts a new conversation, not just a celebration.
The other Friday winners were just as notable. Emphatic won the Juvenile Fillies, beating 2-1 favourite Miss Monica by one and a half lengths after Miss Monica was bumped at the start. Irish bred Libertango won the Juvenile Turf Sprint, for a fourth win in six starts. Sun Goddess, another Irish bred, won the Juvenile Fillies Turf and extended her winning streak to six races. Haffner won the Juvenile Turf on his American debut, for a fourth win in seven starts, and that win took Aidan O'Brien past Baffert on the all time Breeders Cup winners list, with 23 wins, after O'Brien had also won the Juvenile Fillies Turf with Sun Goddess.
The Friday results table below is the full championship card, in race order.
| Friday race | Winner | Trainer | Jockey | Purse | | Juvenile Turf Sprint | Libertango | Not listed in Friday reporting used here | Not listed in Friday reporting used here | 1 million dollars | | Juvenile Fillies | Emphatic | Not listed in Friday reporting used here | Not listed in Friday reporting used here | 2 million dollars | | Juvenile Fillies Turf | Sun Goddess | Aidan O'Brien | Ryan Moore | 1 million dollars | | Juvenile | Hughes | Bob Baffert | Flavien Prat | 2 million dollars | | Juvenile Turf | Haffner | Aidan O'Brien | Ryan Moore | 1 million dollars |
Two trainer and jockey details in that table are deliberately left blank, because the Friday reporting used for this article confirms the winners and the headline trainers, but does not confirm every trainer and jockey for the first two races in the sources checked. That is better than guessing a name that could be wrong. The winners, the Juvenile time, the margins, and the payouts for Hughes, Sun Goddess and Haffner are confirmed across BloodHorse, NBC Sports, Paulick Report and the Courier-Journal.
Why does Hughes winning matter for the Kentucky Derby?
The Breeders Cup Juvenile is not just a championship race, it is also an early stop on the Road to the 2027 Kentucky Derby, and a win here earns valuable points toward qualifying for that race, as well as a claim for the Eclipse Award as champion two year old male. Hughes is now five for five, with three Grade 1 wins, and he has won on two different tracks, at Santa Anita and now at Keeneland, which answers the main question that was asked before Friday, whether he could win outside Southern California.
The road from the Juvenile to the Kentucky Derby is long, and Baffert himself knows it is rocky. Horses get injured, they grow, they change, and the Derby is run over a longer distance, one mile and a quarter, against a field of 20, not six. But any conversation about the early favourite for the 2027 Run for the Roses now starts in Baffert's barn, according to the Courier-Journal, and Hughes will go into the winter as the horse every other Derby contender is measured against. If he stays healthy through the winter, his next races will be among the most watched prep races of the spring. If he does not, the Derby picture opens up completely, and a horse like American History, who finished second on Friday, or Salahudin, who finished third, will have beaten the best two year old in America on his own track in a future prep race.
What changed in the Classic field?
Magnitude was withdrawn from the Classic on veterinary advice, the Breeders Cup announced on Thursday. Magnitude, trained by Steve Asmussen, was 6-1 on the morning line from post 6, and had won the Dubai World Cup and the Stephen Foster Stakes this year. His withdrawal leaves a field of seven, not eight, and it removes one of the leading older horses who had beaten Sovereignty in the Stephen Foster.
The Classic field now, in post order, is as follows. Morning line odds are from the Monday draw, and they do not change when a horse is scratched, although live odds will move, especially for the horses who benefit from Magnitude's absence.
| Post | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Morning line | | 1 | T O Password | Daisuke Takayanagi | Kazushi Kimura | 30-1 | | 2 | Sovereignty | Bill Mott | Junior Alvarado | 5-2 | | 3 | Golden Tempo | Cherie DeVaux | Jose Ortiz | 5-1 | | 4 | The Puma | Not listed in draw reporting used here | Not listed in draw reporting used here | 10-1 | | 5 | Forever Young | Yoshito Yahagi | Ryusei Sakai | 2-1 | | 6 | Magnitude | Steve Asmussen | Withdrawn, veterinary advice | 6-1, scratched | | 7 | Knightsbridge | Bill Mott | Not listed in draw reporting used here | 9-2 | | 8 | Napoleon Solo | Chad Summers | Not listed in draw reporting used here | 15-1 |
Forever Young, the 2-1 favourite from post 5, defends the Classic he won last year, and tries to join Tiznow as the only horse to win the Classic twice. Sovereignty, the 5-2 second choice from post 2, is the reigning Horse of the Year, the 2025 Kentucky Derby, Belmont and Travers winner, and the horse who missed last year's Classic with a fever. Golden Tempo, the 5-1 third choice from post 3, is the 2026 Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner, making this the first Classic since 1991 to feature two Derby winners, Sovereignty and Golden Tempo, alongside the reigning Classic winner. That three way meeting is the defining storyline of the weekend, and Magnitude's withdrawal does not change it, it sharpens it, because there are now fewer horses to spoil the three way battle.
Knightsbridge, at 9-2 from post 7, won the Pacific Classic and is trained by Bill Mott, who also trains Sovereignty. Napoleon Solo, at 15-1 from post 8, won the Preakness Stakes. The Puma, at 10-1 from post 4, and T O Password, at 30-1 from post 1, are the outsiders, but the Classic is run over one mile and a quarter on dirt, and a slow early pace or a troubled trip for a favourite can bring an outsider into the race late.
What are the Saturday race times and how can I watch them?
Saturday's nine championship races run in the order below, with post times in Eastern Time first, then London and Karachi conversions. London is four hours ahead of Eastern Time in this period, because the UK is on GMT and the United States is still on daylight time until Sunday morning. Karachi is nine hours ahead of Eastern Time. Post times are approximate and subject to change, so check the official Breeders Cup schedule on race day.
| Saturday race | Post time Eastern | London GMT | Karachi PKT | | Filly and Mare Sprint | 13:10 | 17:10 | 22:10 | | Turf Sprint | 13:48 | 17:48 | 22:48 | | Dirt Mile | 14:26 | 18:26 | 23:26 | | Filly and Mare Turf | 15:04 | 19:04 | 00:04 Sunday | | Sprint | 15:42 | 19:42 | 00:42 Sunday | | Mile | 16:20 | 20:20 | 01:20 Sunday | | Distaff | 16:58 | 20:58 | 01:58 Sunday | | Turf | 17:36 | 21:36 | 02:36 Sunday | | Classic, 7 million dollars | 18:16 | 22:16 | 03:16 Sunday |
In the United States, Saturday coverage is on USA Network and Peacock from 13:00 Eastern, and on NBC and Peacock from 15:30 Eastern to 18:30 Eastern, with the Classic at 18:16 Eastern on NBC and Peacock. In the UK, ITV4 shows selected Saturday races, including the Mile, Distaff, Turf and Classic, with Sky Sports Racing showing the full meeting. FanDuel TV also carries the Players Show.
The Distaff, at 16:58 Eastern, is now eight runners after Scottish Lassie was scratched for a second year running, with Nitrogen the 6-5 favourite from post 2 and Fully Subscribed the 8-5 second choice from post 4. The Turf, at 17:36 Eastern, is 14 runners, with Diamond Necklace the 3-1 favourite from post 12, Bay City Roller 5-1 from post 13, and Benvenuto Cellini 6-1 from post 2. The Filly and Mare Turf, at 15:04 Eastern, features Blue Bolt, confirmed after being conditional earlier in the week, at 5-2 from post 12, with Precise 7-2 from post 11.
What should fans watch for on Saturday?
First, watch the Classic pace. With only seven runners, and with Forever Young, Sovereignty and Golden Tempo all wanting a clean trip, the early pace will decide whether the race is a sprint home or a stamina test. Second, watch Sovereignty's trip from post 2. He is drawn inside, which can be a trap if he gets boxed in, or an advantage if he gets a clean run along the rail. Third, watch Golden Tempo's second start since his Derby and Belmont wins. He followed the same path Sovereignty took a year ago, and Saturday is his chance to prove he belongs with the older horses, not just with his own age group. Fourth, watch the Turf and the Distaff for the horses who were not in the Classic conversation but who can still define the weekend. A big win in the Turf, at 5 million dollars, or the Distaff, can be just as memorable as the Classic itself. Fifth, watch for further scratches on Saturday morning. Championship week scratches continued into Friday, with Gaudreau, Earth Song, Scottish Lassie and others coming out, and a horse who is in the field on Friday night is not guaranteed to be in the field on Saturday afternoon.
