Quick Answer
The Royal Enclosure requires shoulder straps at least 1 inch or 2.5cm wide and hats or headpieces with a solid base of at least 4 inches or 10cm. Fascinators are not permitted for anyone over 17. Men need morning dress with a top hat, and bow ties and cravats are refused.
The Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot has the only British racecourse dress code that publishes measurements. Shoulder straps must be at least 1 inch or 2.5cm wide. A headpiece must have a solid base of at least 4 inches or 10cm in diameter. Fascinators are not permitted.
Those numbers exist because the rules are enforced. This is what the code actually says, taken from Ascot's own published guidance, along with the parts that trip people up.
What is the Royal Enclosure dress code for women?
Ascot requires the following.
- A dress or skirt falling just above the knee or longer. Lace and chiffon are permitted.
- Shoulder straps a minimum of 1 inch or 2.5cm wide.
- A hat. A headpiece or hatinator is acceptable instead, provided it has a solid base at least 4 inches or 10cm in diameter.
A trouser suit is permitted if the material and colour match. A jumpsuit is permitted if it falls below the knee and meets the strap requirement. A jacket or pashmina may be worn, but whatever is underneath must still comply on its own.
The following are not permitted: strapless, one shoulder, off the shoulder or bardot styles, halter necks, spaghetti straps, sheer fabric and visible midriffs.
Ascot defines each of those terms. A halter neck is a garment held up by a strap around the neck with an open back. Sheer means see through or entirely transparent. A visible midriff is the mid region of the torso between chest and waist.
Why are fascinators banned in the Royal Enclosure?
Fascinators are not permitted in the Royal Enclosure for anyone aged 17 or over. Ascot defines a fascinator as a small headpiece attached to a comb, hair clip or headband that does not have a solid base of at least 4 inches or 10cm.
So the ban is really a minimum size rule. A headpiece with a solid base that size or larger is a hatinator and is acceptable. Below it, it is a fascinator and is not.
This catches more people than any other rule at Royal Ascot, for a simple reason: fascinators are permitted in the Queen Anne, Village and Windsor Enclosures with no size requirement at all. The same item is fine in three enclosures and refused in the fourth.
If you are buying a headpiece for the Royal Enclosure, measure the base.
What is the Royal Enclosure dress code for men?
Morning dress, specifically.
- A morning coat in black, grey or navy.
- A waistcoat and a necktie. Patterns of a patriotic nature, such as a national flag, are acceptable.
- A black or grey top hat.
- Black dress shoes worn with socks covering the ankle.
Cravats, bow ties and neckerchiefs are not permitted. Neither are customised top hats carrying coloured ribbons, feathers or embellishments.
Top hats may be removed inside a restaurant or private box, and also within an enclosed external seating area, terrace, balcony or garden. They are expected to be worn elsewhere.
Tartan trews with a morning coat and top hat are acceptable, though Ascot states you cannot mix part Scottish dress code with part Royal Enclosure dress code.
Can you hire morning dress for Royal Ascot?
Yes, and hiring is the usual route rather than buying. Ascot names Moss as its official men's formalwear hire licensee, whose Royal Ascot morning wear meets the Royal Enclosure code and is returned after the day.
Favourbrook is named as the official men's formalwear licensee for purchase.
Neither is compulsory. Any morning dress meeting the published requirements is acceptable.
What do juniors have to wear in the Royal Enclosure?
Those aged 10 to 17 follow the adult code with two relaxations.
Girls may wear a headpiece or fascinator with no size requirement, which is the one place a fascinator is acceptable in the Royal Enclosure.
Boys may wear morning dress, or alternatively a dark coloured lounge suit with a collared shirt and necktie.
Children under 10 are not permitted in the Royal Enclosure at all, and those aged 10 to 17 must buy admission rather than entering free as they would in the other enclosures.
What about overseas visitors and military personnel?
Visitors are welcome to wear the formal national dress of their country. If that dress does not include a hat or headpiece, none is required. Religious headdress is permitted in place of a hat.
Serving military personnel may wear Service Dress or the equivalent.
Can you get into the Royal Enclosure?
Not by buying a ticket. The Royal Enclosure is open only to members and their guests. Becoming a member requires sponsorship by two existing members, and applications are subject to approval by His Majesty's Representative at Ascot.
The enclosure dates to 1807, when an area was set aside for the family, guests and household of King George III to watch the first Gold Cup.
If you do not have two contacts who are members, the Queen Anne Enclosure is the closest equivalent that can be bought, and it also includes Parade Ring and Grandstand access.
What if you cannot follow the dress code?
Ascot makes provision for medical conditions. It asks that you contact its access officer at accessibility@ascot.com in advance, setting out the issue, and states it will try to accommodate where possible.
Do this before the day. Staff at the gate have no way to verify anything on the spot.
For any other dress code question, Ascot directs Royal Enclosure enquiries to royal.enclosure@ascot.com.
The rules that catch people out
Four, in order of how often they come up.
- Fascinators. Not permitted. Measure the base of any headpiece: 4 inches minimum.
- Strap width. 1 inch minimum, which rules out most spaghetti and many thin straps.
- Bow ties and cravats. Not permitted for men, despite feeling formal.
- Ankle socks. Socks must cover the ankle with dress shoes.
Everything else in the code follows from reading it once. These four are the ones people get wrong because they seem like details that could not possibly matter.
At Royal Ascot's Royal Enclosure, they are the details that do.
