Quick Answer

Wednesday's Breeders Cup scratches removed Scottish Lassie from the Distaff for a second year running, Gaudreau from the Juvenile after a fever, and Zulu Kingdom from the Mile. Forever Young completed a perfect final work for Saturday's Classic.

The Breeders Cup is supposed to be decided on the track, but on Wednesday it was reshaped in the vet's office and the trainer's barn. A wave of scratches, announced by Breeders Cup officials and confirmed by trainers to the Daily Racing Form and Thoroughbred Daily News, removed contenders from five races, cut the Juvenile to seven runners, and left the Distaff with eight fillies and mares. The most painful story belongs to Scottish Lassie, scratched from the Distaff for a second year in a row.

Friday's card at Keeneland starts in less than 48 hours, and Saturday's Classic is the richest race in North America at 7 million dollars. The scratches do not change the headliners. Forever Young still defends the Classic, Nitrogen still heads the Distaff, and Sovereignty still tries to deny the defending champion a second straight Classic. What the scratches do change is the shape of the races around them: smaller fields, different pace scenarios, and new chances for horses who were on the also eligible list.

Why is Scottish Lassie out of the Distaff again?

Scottish Lassie, trained by Jorge Abreu, was scratched from the 2 million dollar Breeders Cup Distaff on Wednesday, Breeders Cup officials announced. No reason was given in the official announcement. It is the second year in a row that the McKinzie filly has been removed from the Distaff after entries were taken and post positions assigned. Last year she was scratched from the 2025 Distaff at Del Mar two days before the race, having drawn post 5 at 12-1.

This year Scottish Lassie had drawn post 5 at 15-1, with Luis Saez named to ride. She is a Grade 1 winner at two in the Frizette and at three in the Coaching Club American Oaks, and this year she finished second to Fully Subscribed in both the Grade 2 Shuvee and the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga. Those two runner up efforts explain why she was respected in the market, even at 15-1. With no also eligibles drawn for the Distaff, no horse moves into her spot, so the field drops from nine to eight.

That matters for the race shape. Nitrogen, the 6-5 morning line favourite from post 2, and Fully Subscribed, the 8-5 second choice from post 4, now have one fewer rival to worry about, and the pace scenario tightens. Splendora, at 9-2 from post 8 under Bob Baffert, becomes an even more important pace factor, because she can press the leaders and disrupt the front end. For fans building exotic bets, an eight horse field instead of nine changes the spread of tickets, and it removes a horse who had twice run Fully Subscribed close.

Which other horses were scratched on Wednesday?

The full Wednesday list, confirmed across Thoroughbred Daily News, Paulick Report and FanDuel Research, is longer than just Scottish Lassie, and it touches both days of the meeting.

Gaudreau, trained by Chad Brown, was scratched from Friday's Breeders Cup Juvenile after spiking a fever on Wednesday morning. Co-owner Peter Bradley told BloodHorse the colt had been fine the previous evening. "It is a gut shot anytime this happens," Bradley said. Gaudreau, a two year old by Nyquist, had drawn post 2 at 8-1 with Manny Franco named to ride, after finishing second in the Champagne last time out. He was the fifth choice on the morning line. With no also eligible drawn for the Juvenile, the field drops from eight to seven.

Brown also scratched Zulu Kingdom from Saturday's Breeders Cup Mile. Zulu Kingdom, a multiple Grade 1 winner by Ten Sovereigns, was one of the European hopes for the Mile, and his removal further thins a race that had already lost Gstaad and Constitution River in the pre entry stage.

Graham Motion scratched two horses for high temperatures, according to the Daily Racing Form. Induction came out of the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf, and Test Score came out of the Breeders Cup Turf. Both had high temperatures, which is a reminder of how fragile two year olds and travelling horses can be in championship week, even when there is no veterinary scrutiny issue involved.

Finally, Go for Launch was scratched from Friday's Juvenile Fillies Turf. Go for Launch, trained by Kevin Attard, had given Horse of the Year Flightline his first stakes winner in the Bolton Landing at Saratoga on 26 August, and had finished second in the Grade 3 Algonquin Stakes at Woodbine last time out. She was 30-1 on the morning line. Her scratch moves Irish bred Silent Beauty in from the also eligible list. Silent Beauty, trained by Kevin Philippart De Foy, won the Group 3 Firth of Clyde Challenge Cup at Ayr in England, and if there are no other changes she will break from the outside post 14 at 30-1.

Did Forever Young work well for the Classic?

Yes, and that is the best news of the week for Classic fans. Defending Breeders Cup Classic champion Forever Young put the finishing touches on his preparation on Wednesday morning at Keeneland, breezing an easy half mile in 50 and one fifth seconds under trainer Yoshito Yahagi's watchful eye. He worked in company with stablemate American Stage, who is entered in the Breeders Cup Sprint, in what Yahagi described as an ideal final tune up.

"It was a perfect gallop," Yahagi said. "The jockey gave a perfect ride. The horse is moving beautifully. I am very satisfied." He added: "There is no concern about the horse's condition. He is very fresh." Forever Young, the 2-1 morning line favourite, has won 12 of his 16 starts, has never finished worse than third, and has earned more than 32 million dollars. He tries on Saturday to join Tiznow as the only repeat winner of the Classic.

His main rival remains Sovereignty, the reigning Horse of the Year, at 5-2 from post 2. The Classic field is eight horses, with no also eligibles, after Further Ado and Forged Steel moved to the Dirt Mile and Phileas Fogg was scratched earlier with a left front foot issue. The full Classic field, in post order, is: T O Password at 30-1 from post 1, Sovereignty at 5-2 from post 2, Golden Tempo at 5-1 from post 3, The Puma at 10-1 from post 4, Forever Young at 2-1 from post 5, Magnitude at 6-1 from post 6, Knightsbridge at 9-2 from post 7, and Napoleon Solo at 15-1 from post 8. This is the first Classic since 1991 to feature two Kentucky Derby winners in the same field, with Forever Young and Sovereignty both having won the Derby in different years.

What are the updated fields for the big Saturday races?

The Turf, at 5 million dollars, has 14 horses after the Test Score scratch, with Diamond Necklace the 3-1 favourite from post 12, Bay City Roller at 5-1 from post 13, and Benvenuto Cellini at 6-1 from post 2. The also eligibles Map of Stars and Telescopic remain on standby if there are further scratches. The Filly and Mare Turf has Blue Bolt confirmed at 5-2 from post 12, with Precise at 7-2 from post 11. Blue Bolt was conditional for much of pre entry week, but she is now a confirmed runner, and that changes the race.

The Mile, after the Zulu Kingdom scratch, still features Ask Ikigomi from Japan, Puerto Rico from the Aidan O'Brien yard, and Qirat, who all drew in after the earlier withdrawals. The Sprint, the Dirt Mile, the Turf Sprint and the Filly and Mare Sprint all keep their main contenders, with Further Ado and Forged Steel now first preference in the Dirt Mile after leaving the Classic.

For Friday, the Juvenile is now seven horses, the Juvenile Fillies Turf has Silent Beauty in from the also eligible list, and the Juvenile Turf has lost Induction, which may move another also eligible into the field. Check the official Breeders Cup scratch list on Friday morning before betting, because championship week scratches often continue into race day morning, especially for two year olds.

In the UK, ITV4 shows the Friday card and the Mile, Distaff, Turf and Classic on Saturday, with Sky Sports Racing showing the full meeting. FanDuel TV also carries the Players Show. Post times are approximate and subject to change, so check the official Breeders Cup schedule on race day.

What should fans watch for now?

First, watch the Distaff pace. With Scottish Lassie out, Nitrogen and Fully Subscribed have a cleaner run, but Splendora from post 8 can still make it a test. Second, watch the Juvenile. A seven horse field with the 8-1 fifth choice out means the favourite will be shorter, and the race becomes a test of which two year old handles Keeneland best. Third, watch Forever Young in the Classic. His final work was described as perfect, he is fresh, and he has never finished worse than third in 16 starts. Sovereignty will need to be at his best to deny him a second Classic, and the first two Derby winners in the same Classic since 1991 is a storyline that deserves a big audience.

The Breeders Cup is often decided by the horses who are still standing on Saturday evening, not just the fastest ones on paper. Wednesday reminded everyone of that. Scottish Lassie will have to wait another year, Gaudreau's connections will be devastated, and Silent Beauty gets a chance she did not expect 48 hours ago. That is championship racing, and it is why Friday and Saturday at Keeneland are unmissable.
